"I was not sent as one to call down curses on people, but I was sent as a mercy."

'My religion commanded me to care about my neighbours.'

God's Messenger was having a Jewish neighbour who used to put dirts by the door of the him before prayers. One day the God's Messenger did not find such dirts, he decided to visit this Jewish man and he knocked his door. The Jewish man opened. He was surprised for such an unexpected visit. He had to explaine that he did not put the dirts because he got ill. Then he wondered and asked the Prophet PBUH why did you visit me while I'm not behaving good to you? God's Messenger replied:

'My religion commanded me to care about my neighbours.'

'Was he not a human soul?'

Once a bier was carried before the God's Messenger and he stood up in respect. His companions also stood up. After the procession passed, one of his companion told him that the deceased was a Jew. God's Messenger replied:

'Was he not a human soul? Was he not a human created and made by God? Wasn't he being with dignity?'

'He who eats his fill while his neighbour goes without food is not a believer.'

Muslims will be questioned, if their Christian or Jewish neighbours go hungry while they can eat. God's Messenger said:

'He who eats his fill while his neighbour goes without food is not a believer.'

'Allah is merciful only to those of His servant who are merciful to others.'

Usamah ibn Zayd narrated:

The daughter (Zainab) of the Prophet (pbuh) sent a messenger to the Prophet (pbuh) asking him to come as her child was about to dying. However, the Prophet (pbuh) returned the messenger and asked him to carry his greetings to her and say:

'Whatever Allah takes is for Him and whatever He gives is for Him. Everything with Him has a limited time and so she should be patient and hope for Allah's reward.'

She again sent a message to him, insisting that he should come. The Prophet (pbuh) stood up and went to her, and so did his companions; Sa'id ibn Ubadah, Mu'ath ibn Jabal, Ubay ibn Ka'ab, Zayd ibn Thabit and some other men. When the child was brought to God's Messenger (pbuh); its body trembling and moving; the eyes of God's Messenger began shedding tears. Upon this, Sa'd asked:

'O Messenger of God! What is the weeping and shedding of tears?'

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) replied:

'It is mercy which Allah has put into the hearts of His servants. Allah is merciful only to those of His servants who are merciful to others'

'Did you then split open his heart so that you know whether he truly meant it when he said it or not?'

Usama ibn Zayd narrates,

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent us to al-Huraqa, a sub-tribe of Juhayna, and we came upon the people in the morning at their springs. A man of the Ansar and I overtook one of their men. When we descended on him, he said:

'There is no god but Allah.'

The Ansari held back from him, but I stabbed him with my spear until I had killed him. When we arrived in Madina, that reached the Prophet and he said:

'O Usama, did you kill him after he had said, "There is no god but Allah"?'

I said:

'Messenger of Allah, he was only trying to save himself.'

God's Messenger, getting very angry, replied to him:

'Did you then split open his heart so that you know whether he truly meant it when he said it or not?'

He continued to repeat it until I wished that I had only become Muslim on that day.

'Salman spoke the truth.'

Abu Juhayfa Wahb ibn 'Abdullah narrates,

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, joined Salman and Abu'd-Darda' together in brotherhood. Salman visited Abu'd-Darda' and saw his wife Umm ad-Darda' poorly dressed and asked to her:

'What's the matter with you?'

She replied:

'Your brother Abu'd-Darda' has no need of this world.'

Later, Abu'd-Darda' came and made some food for him. Salman asked him to eat. He said:

'I am fasting.'

Salman replied:

'I will not eat unless you eat.'

And he ate. In the night, Abu'd-Darda' went to stand in prayer and Salman asked him to sleep, and he slept. Then he got up again and Salman asked him to sleep again. At the end of the night, Salman said:

'Now get up and we will pray!'

Salman continued:

'Your Lord has rights over you and your self has rights over you, so give those with rights their due.'

Abu'd-Darda' came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and mentioned this to him and the Prophet (pbuh) said:

'Salman spoke the truth.'

'I started thinking that he would include them among my heirs.'

One day, Abdullah ibn Amr had a sheep slaughtered. God's Messenger asked him:

'Have you sent some of its meat to our Jewish neighbour?'

After repeating this several times, God's Messenger added:

'Gabriel has repeatedly asked me to behave with my neighbours until I started thinking that he would include them among my heirs.'

'I swear by God that I do this prayer every time I perform my salah!'

One day, Aisha sees God’s Messenger very happy, thinking this is a good opportunity, asks him to pray for herself:

'O God’s Messenger. Pray for me!'

He was really in good mood and prayed for her:

'O My Lord! Forgive all the sins she committed in the past and future; hidden or open!'

Aisha gets so excited with this prayer. God’s Messengers asks her:

'Is this my prayer that made you so happy?'

‘O God’s Messenger! How can I not be?’

God’s Messenger gets very serious suddenly and says:

'I swear by God that I do this prayer for all muslims every time I perform my salah!'

'Allah does not like the man who thinks himself superior to his friends.'

During a break on a journey, the companions shared work among themselves to prepare food. The Prophet (pbuh) also joined them and took upon himself the task of collecting firewood. His companions pleaded him not to do it and that he need not take the trouble, but he replied:

'I do not like to attain any difference to myself. Allah does not like the man who thinks himself superior to his friends.'

'What can I do for you if Allah has removed mercy from your heart'

Once, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and some of his companions were invited to a dinner. On their way to this dinner, they came across the Prophet’s grandson Hussein, who was still very young at that time. Hussein was playing with his friends when they saw him. When the Prophet Muhammad saw the children, he went forward and opened his arms wide in order to hug them, and the children started to run around in play. Then the Prophet Muhammad ran after Hussein to join him in his game until he caught him. When he caught Hussein, he put one hand under his chin and one hand at the back of his neck and kissed him.

One day bedouin came to the Prophet Muhammad and said,

'You are kissing children but it is not on our tradition to play with them and kiss them.'

The Prophet replied,

'What can I do for you if Allah has removed mercy from your heart'

'Maybe Allah will produce from their offspring ones who worship Him alone'

One day the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) went to a village called Ta’if near Mecca, to deliver God’s message after he had been turned down by his own tribe. However, the people of Ta’if greeted him with mockery and ridiculed and set upon him the idlers and the louts of the city. They pelted him and his servent Zayd with clods and rocks. God's Messenger was so badly stoned that the blood began to spurt from all over his body. Even after this, rather than asking for God’s wrath to be brought down upon village, he chose to pray like this:

'Maybe Allah will produce from their offspring ones who worship Him alone'

'Well then, eat it yourselves.'

One day, a man came to the presence of the God's Messenger and said:

'O God's Messenger. I am perished!'

The Prophet Muhammad said:

'What is it that made you perished?'

He replied:

'I had intercourse with my wife during the fasting hours of Ramadan!'

God's Messenger said:

'Do you have any possession to save a slave from slavery?'

Man said 'No'. God's Messenger asked:

'Can you fast two successive months?'.

Man said 'No'. God's Messenger asked:

'Can you find food to feed 60 poor?'

Man said 'No' and sat down at a short distance from the Prophet. Some time later, a man arrived, bringing a dish of food. The Prophet called out:

'Where is the man who is lost?'

'Here',he answered. Muhammad told him:

“Take this food and give it away in charity.”

'To one poorer than myself? My family has nothing to eat!'

The Prophet replied with a smile.

'Well then, eat it yourselves.'

'The most perfect of believers is the best of them in character and the best of you is the kindest to his family.'

God's Messenger encouraged Muslims through his enlightening words to behave kindly to women. He declared:

'The most perfect of believers is the best of them in character and the best of you is the kindest to his family.'

'O Allah! Have I conveyed it?'

Abu Humayd 'Abdu'r-Rahman ibn Sa'd as-Sa'idi narrates,

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, appointed a man from al-Azd, called Ibn Al-Lutiyya to collect the zakat. When he arrived back, he said:

'This is for you and this was given as a gift to me.'

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood on the minbar, praised and glorified Allah and then said:

'I appointed one of your men to be in charge of an activity for which Allah has made me responsible, and then he came and said, "This is for you and this was given as a gift to me." Why did he not sit in the house of his father or mother until his gift came to him if he is speaking the truth. By Allah, none of you will take anything without right but that he will meet Allah Almighty carrying it on the Day of Rising. I do not know if any of you will meet Allah carrying a camel which is grumbling, or a cow which is mooing, or a sheep which is bleating.'

Then he raised his hands until the whites of his armpits could be seen, and repeated three times:

'O Allah! Have I conveyed it?'

'Muhammad, allot to me some of property of Allah which you have.'

Anas narrates,

I was walking with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he was wearing a Najrani cloak with a thick border. A bedouin came up to him and pulled the cloak violently. I looked at the Prophet's shoulder and it had been marked by the border of the cloak due to the severity of his pull. Then he said:

'Muhammad, allot to me some of property of Allah which you have.'

He turned to him and laughed and then ordered a gift to be given to him.

'Do you desire to kill it many times?'

As reported by Ibn 'Abbas, when God’s Messenger once saw a man sharpening his knife directly before the sheep he would slaughter, he said to him:

'Do you desire to kill it many times?'

'It was saved from your evil, as you were from its.'

Once on return from a military campaign, a few Companions took away the chicks of a bird from their nest to stroke them. The mother bird came back and, when it could not find its chicks in the nest, it began to fly around screeching. When informed of the matter, God's Messenger became angry and ordered the chicks to be put back in the nest.

Once he told his Companions that one of the previous Prophets was reproached by God because he set on fire a nest of ants.

He was in Mina when some of his Companions once attacked a snake to kill it. However, the snake managed to escape. Watching this from afar, God's Messenger remarked:

'It was saved from your evil, as you were from its.'

'Pay the man his debt! And add to it the amount of twenty gallons because you have frightened him!'

Zayd ibn San'an narrates:

Once, God’s Messenger borrowed some money from me. I was not yet a Muslim then. I went to him to collect my debt before its due time, and insulted him, saying:

'You the children of 'Abd al-Muttalib, are very reluctant to pay your debts!'

Umar became very angry with this insult of mine and shouted:

'O enemy of God! Were it not for the treaty between us and the Jewish community, I would cut off your head! Speak to God’s Messenger politely!'

However, God’s Messenger smiled at me and, turning to Umar, said:

'Umar, pay the man his debt! And add to it the amount of twenty gallons because you have frightened him!'
